A little bit of history
In the library at Firmi, archeological pieces revealing vestiges of the Gallo-Roman times can be seen. In the Middle Ages, Firmi was a fortified hamlet, surrounded by vineyards, chestnut trees and meadows. With the Industrial Revolution, Firmi changed dramatically. The first iron was cast in Firmi on the 24th of December 1828. A few years later, Duke Decazes set up the industry in Decazeville but coal was still exploited in underground galleries and open cast coal mines.
Today
Today Firmi is the « green city », a small residential town dominated by the Puy de Wolf, the largest Serpentinite massif in Europe. It is a Natura 2000 protected zone.
Two hiking trails cross the city, the GR65 route of Santiago de Compostella from Puy-en-Velay to Decazeville and the GR62b, from Conques to Toulouse, which offers the possibility to join the hiking trail from Arles to Santiago de Compostella.
