André Galtié’s medals, which embellish Decazeville’s War Memorial, are a moving tribute both to the soldiers who fell during the First World War and to all the miners who died carrying out their work. In four bronze bas-reliefs finely sculpted with an obvious pacifist commitment, the artist evokes the themes of War, Peace, the Soldier and the Miner against the backdrop of an industrial mining town, with coal wagons, pithead frame, smoking chimneys …. The whole monument is surmounted by an imposing miner’s lamp.
