A little bit of history

Aubin is one of the oldest cities in the Rouergue region. The legend talks about a Roman general, Claudius Albinus, who installed a garrison on the rocky peak, around 193 after A.D.

The first paper trail of « castrum de Albinio » dates from the first Lord, Raymond d’Albin, who built a military fortress before 961 on the same rocky peak. The city grew in the Middle Ages at the foot of the fortress. In the 12th century, as the number of parishioners was increasing, the church of Notre Dame d’Aubin was built. With the creation of markets in the XIV century, Aubin became a commercial crossroad in the territory. In the 9th century, the city was transformed by the development of mining. At the peak of the mining activity, Aubin almost reached 10 000 residents, before began the decline, related to the cessation of the mining exploitation.
